TIME AND LOCATION OF CONTEST
All Contest tournaments will occur at the Indiana Convention Center during Gen Con 2023. There will be one (1) alternates tournament and one (1) final tournament. The alternates tournament will occur from 6pm – 8pm on Saturday, August 3, 2023. The final tournament will occur from 8pm – 12am on Saturday, August 3, 2023. Entrants who were awarded participation in the Contest as part of Sponsor’s The Road to Gen Con 2023 contest (the “Road to Gen Con Winners”) are not required to participate in the alternates tournament and automatically qualify for the final tournament. All other entrants earn the potential to be an alternate player in the final tournament by playing in the alternates tournament as described below. Sponsor reserves the right to add, cancel, reschedule, and/or re-locate any or all Contests at any time for any reason in its sole and absolute discretion and without prior notice. Participants are solely responsible for any expenses incurred to attend the Contest, including travel and admission to Gen Con, regardless of whether the Contest is held as advertised.
HOW TO ENTER
Each person is eligible to enter one (1) time in the alternates tournament. Each entrant, excluding Road to Gen Con Winners, must register for the Contest through Gen Con’s event registration system located at https://www.gencon.com/events?c=indy2023. Registration through Gen Con’s event registration system is subject to the Gen Con’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Registration for the alternates tournament will be on a first come, first served basis. No more than thirty-two (32) participants will be allowed to compete in the alternates tournament. No more than sixteen (16) participants will be allowed to compete in the final tournament. To register, you will be required to provide your name, email address, phone number, address, birthday and any other information required by the Sponsor or Gen Con. Participants must fully complete and submit all non-optional data requested to be eligible. Incomplete and/or inaccurate entries are void. Any person who registers for the Contest or qualifies for the final tournament and then is either late or does not appear may be disqualified in the Sponsor’s sole and absolute discretion. Sponsor has no obligation to reschedule any tournament or provide any alternate tournament to accommodate any participant.
The participants in the final tournament will consist of the following entrants who actually appear on time for the final tournament: the Road to Gen Con Winners, and any selected Finals Alternates (defined below) who are chosen to fill final tournament vacancies. Sponsor, in its sole and absolute discretion, may conduct the final tournament with whatever number of Road to Gen Con Winners appear for the final tournament, even if fewer than sixteen (16). Sponsor is not required to have sixteen (16) participants for the final tournament and/or to fill any openings with Finals Alternates.
WHAT TO BRING
Each participant must bring to the Contest all of the following items:
(a) the game board and the two (2) reference cards for chapters 3 and up from The Op’s Disney Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances Core Set (you do not need the reference card for chapters 1 and2);
(b) three (3) blue and three (3) red Summoner Identifier Rings;
(c) three (3) or more characters and all associated components from any of The Op’s Disney Sorcerer’s Arena: Epic Alliances Core Set, the Turning the Tide expansion pack, Thrills & Chills expansion pack, Leading the Charge expansion pack (after release), and Expansion Pack 4 (after release), including for each character:
1. the character figure standee,
2. the character ability card,
3. the complete character card deck (10 Battle Cards total),
4. the character turn token; and
5. the rules if the character is from an expansion pack;
(d) a supply of Turn Markers;
(e) a supply of Status Effect Tokens;
(f) a supply of Victory Point Tokens.
All of the foregoing Game components must be the original, complete, and unadulterated components from The Op’s Game and must be in acceptable playing condition. The sole exception to the foregoing is that a participant may use suitable substitutes for the Status Effect Tokens, such as pennies. Official The Op alternate art character figure standees are permitted. Players may use sleeves for their decks, and official foil promo cards are permitted, but proxy, third party or self-created cards and characters are not. If a player chooses to use foil cards, those cards must replace the corresponding card(s) in their deck, and their deck must be sleeved.
Any participant who fails to bring the necessary components or brings components that are adulterated, not original, not in playable condition or otherwise not in compliance with these Official Rules may be disqualified in the Sponsor’s sole and absolute discretion. A participant may ask to borrow any missing component from another participant; provided that no participant is required to loan any component to any other participant or to bring excess supplies for other participants. Sponsor, in its sole discretion, may provide a supply of excess components for participants’ use, but is not obligated to provide any components or any particular selection or quantity of components. Sponsor is not responsible for any loss of or damage to the participant’s Game or Game components during the Contest.
Participants are advised that each tournament may last several hours and are advised to bring their own food and water. Sponsor may but are not obligated to provide any food or water.
PARTICIPANT BEHAVIOR
Participants may not engage in any rude, offensive or disruptive behavior at the Contest, including but not limited to any expressions of racism, sexism, homophobia, discrimination, or hate speech; threats; insults; rudeness; belligerence; and other non-professional or uncivil behaviors. Further, participants may not cheat, collude, or engage in any other conduct to circumvent the rules of the Game or the Contest. Any participant who, in Sponsor’s sole and absolute discretion, violates these standards may be disqualified.
GAME PLAY RULES FOR THE CONTEST
The Game will be played during each tournament solely in a one-against-one format. No team play is allowed. Participants may not obtain or seek advice from any other person during a Contest.
Game play during the Contest uses the full Chapter 4 rules from the Game’s core set rulebook as clarified by the official errata available in the FAQ for the Game on The Op’s website, which may be updated at any time (see below for link), and the auxiliary rules for any expansion packs, provided that the following modifications shall apply:
1. At the start of each Game round, each participant shall draft their team of characters from their own supply of characters, following a serpentine draft as outlined on page 13 of the Core Set rules. First pick is determined by a balanced randomizer, such as a coin flip or die roll. Two competing participants may agree to an intentional draw of characters (again, from each participant’s own supply of characters) rather than using the serpentine draft, in which event both participants shall reveal their drafted characters at the same time.
2. A tie at the end of a round of a Game (i.e., the final sequence of character turns during the Game) is considered a draw.
3. The final round of a Game is determined when any of the following occur: a participant collects their twentieth (20th) Victory Point, a player needs to draw a card from an empty deck, or the time for playing that Game during the Contest expires.

Before play begins in any round of the Game, a participant may request to verify their opponent’s character decks. As the character decks in the Game are pre-constructed, all a participant need verify is that one copy of each card for that deck is present, and that the cards or sleeves are in satisfactory condition, with the backs free of intentional markings or other adulteration. The assistance of a judge may be requested. If a judge determines, in the judge’s sole and absolute discretion, that one or more characters may not be played or that any Game piece has been adulterated or otherwise violates these Official Rules, the character may be removed or the participant may be disqualified in Sponsor’s sole discretion.
NO COLLUSION OR RULE BREAKING
During the Contest, each participant must strictly adhere to the rules of the Game. Any participant who, in the sole and absolute discretion of Sponsor, does not adhere to the rules; uses any method other than playing the Game according to its rules to determine the winner (such as rolling a die, “rock, paper scissors”, or a random card draw); offers compensation to any other participant; and/or attempts to coerce any other participant will be disqualified.
CONTEST TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE AND SCORING
The structure for each tournament of the Contest is a non-elimination, event point-based pairing system, commonly known as a “Swiss” format. This structure allows for players to drop from the event before any round of the Game or complete Game without impacting the pairings of subsequent rounds.
There will be two rounds of the Game played in the alternates tournament and four rounds of the Game played in the final tournament of the Contest. The number of rounds may be lowered in the Sponsor’s sole and absolute discretion if the number of participants in a tournament is twelve (12) or fewer. During each round of a tournament, a participant will play only one (1) Game. If the Game ends before the round is over, the participants should wait and not start another Game. If time for the round expires before the Game is finished, then participants shall finish their turns in the Game and the Game shall end. If there are an odd number of participants at a Contest, a participant may sit out a round of Game play (a “bye”).
Each round of Game play will last approximately forty-five (45) minutes. There will be an approximately ten (10) minute break between each round. A longer meal break may be provided but is not required to be given. All time keeping shall be done by Sponsor and Sponsor’s determinations as to the start and stop times are final and binding. Any participant who does not return to Game play on time may be disqualified in the sole and absolute discretion of Sponsor.
Sponsor will appoint non-participating individuals to act on its behalf as judges to administer the Contest, keep time, resolve disputes and otherwise exercise the authority of the Sponsor as described in these Official Rules. If there is a question about the rules of the Game or a Game piece, a participant may request clarification from a judge. The decisions of the judges are final and binding. Judges cannot alter or amend these Official Rules.
At the end of each round of Game play, each participant shall report the final score of their Game to Sponsor. Each participant has the sole responsibility to accurately report their results to Sponsor. Sponsor is not responsible for any failure of a participant to accurately report Game play results. Any participant who does not accurately report their results may be disqualified in the sole and absolute discretion of Sponsor.
Participants will be randomly paired in the first round of Game play. If there are an odd number of participants at a tournament, one participant will be given a bye. The first-round bye is assigned at random, while the bye in subsequent round will be given to the participant with the then lowest score in the tournament. In the event of a tie for lowest score, the bye is awarded at random to the tying participants.
At the end of each round of Game play, participants are awarded points (“Contest Points”) based on whether they won, tied, or lost the game or had a bye as follows:
Win or bye = 1 contest point
Draw = 0.5 contest points
Loss = 0 contest points
Contest Points are not the same as the Victory Points earned during Game play and are awarded regardless of the margin of victory. Any dispute as to the final score or result of any Game play shall be resolved by the judge(s) and their determination shall be final and binding.
After the final round of the alternates tournament, the participants who finish the alternates tournament shall be ranked by the number of Contest Points earned and placed in ranked order on the alternates list (the “Finals Alternates”). Vacant seats in the final tournament may be filled with Finals Alternates. Each Finals Alternate must remain at the Contest location in order to be selected to fill any vacancies and play in the final tournament. If there are vacancies in the final tournament and Sponsor elects to fill some or all of the vacancies, Sponsor will call out the name(s) of the Final Alternates in ranked order until all of the vacancies the Sponsor desires to fill have been filled. Upon calling a Finals Alternate’s name, the Finals Alternate must immediately confirm his/her ability to participate in the final tournament. If a Finals Alternate fails to respond immediately or to appear at the finals on time, the Finals Alternate will be disqualified and another Finals Alternate may be selected and notified. Sponsor has no liability for any failure of any attempt to notify any Finals Alternate or of any selected Finals Alternate to respond to any notice. Sponsor, in its sole and absolute discretion, may elect to not select any Finals Alternates or to cease selecting Finals Alternates if, in Sponsor’s sole and absolute discretion, the administration of the final tournament would be enhanced by such action.
Sponsor, in its sole and absolute discretion, may conduct the final tournament with whatever number of Road to Gen Con Winners are present and/or with any number of Finals Alternates, even if fewer than sixteen (16). Sponsor is not required to have sixteen (16) participants for the final tournament and/or to fill any openings with Finals Alternates.
If there is a tie between participants for first (1st) through fifth (5th) place in any tournament, the order of the winners shall be determined first by the participant with the highest Opponents’ Win Rate during the final tournament. If there are two or more participants who have the same number of Contest Points and the same Opponents’ Win Rate, then the order of the winners shall be determined by the participant with the highest Average Margin of Victory. The calculation of the Opponents’ Win Rate and Average Margin of Victory are described below and shall be determined by the judge(s), whose determination shall be final and binding. If there are two or more participants in the alternates tournament who are still tied after the application of both tie-breakers, the order of the winners will be chosen randomly by the Sponsor. If there are two or more participants in the final tournament who are still tied after the application of both tie-breakers, then the prizes for the places at issue will be pooled and split evenly among the tied participants. For example, if two participants remain tied for second (2nd) place, the second and third place prizes will be pooled and split evenly between them, with the next highest participant in the rankings receiving the fourth (4th) place prize.
Opponents’ Win Percentage: A participant’s Opponents’ Win Percentage is the average value of the Win Percentages of each of that participant’s opponents in the alternates or final tournament (the total of all of the participant’s opponents’ Win Percentages divided by the number of opponents). Each opponent’s Win Percentage is determined by dividing their number of wins (not Contest Points) at the tournament by the number of games they played during the tournament.
Average Margin of Victory: A participant’s Average Margin of Victory is calculated by taking the total value of the margins by which they won or lost each Game during the alternates or final tournament and dividing that value by the number of games they played at the tournament.
For clarity, for the final tournament, each participant’s Opponent’s Win Percentage and Average Margin of Victory are reset and determined solely by the results during the final tournament.
