Not All Heroes Wear Capes: Father’s Day Gifts for The Guy Who Has Enough Ties

With the breadth of fictional action heroes fighting steadfastly from the big screen with tales of bravery, triumph, and defeat, it’s easy to forget that the real MVPs of the summer season are the ones who will be spearheading an inevitable stream of barbecues, camping trips, and ballgames. That makes June the most appropriate month of all to celebrate dads, so for Father’s Day this year, give the paternal figure of your family something he’ll actually want to pack the car with besides the beverage cooler.

Presenting some goof-proof hobby games to show the superhero in your life that there’s no one else you’d rather have saving you from the misfortune of Mom saying “No!”

Thanos Rising: Avengers Infinity War

No matter how big a “comic nerd” your dad may be, it might take him a minute to think of a male super-villain who has children… unless movie memory serves him and “Mad Titan” Thanos comes to mind.  Hopefully the only Stones your father is looking for are the ones touring this summer, but if instead Daddy-o tends to get pretty selfish with some power in his hands (say, with the electric carving knife at Thanksgiving), get his grip on Thanos Rising: Avengers Infinity War

Just the game to bring the family together, it lets up to four players defend the universe from Thanos and his henchmen by thwarting his plan to wipe out half of the population by collecting all six Infinity Stones. Players roll dice to recruit fellow heroes, take out villains, and overpower Thanos’s grip on the Infinity Gauntlet. The 120 mm Thanos centerpiece can double as an art project for the handyman of the house, and become a painting hobby to go with this stunning and sturdy hobby game that can either end with high-fives of pride, or encouraging pats on the back.

Codenames: Marvel

If your dad’s main superpower is his uncanny ability to bring home a head of cabbage when a recipe calls for lettuce, give him a Marvel-themed guessing game that will nonchalantly hone his identifying skills. Codenames: Marvel is an officially licensed version of a hit social word game featuring characters from the Marvel Universe, such as Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Avengers! In this game, S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra are two opposing teams on each side of a grid of “Asset Cards”. The object is to successfully locate all of the “field agents” (or targeted cards) on your team by communicating only through limited clues. For 2-8 players aged 9 and up, it’s perfect for experimenting with early to later stages of telepathy.

Munchkin: Marvel Edition

He always steals the last slice, dispatches pesky mosquitoes, and is a sage of sibling rivalry… so what better game to exhibit a patriarch’s pillaging and plundering ways than a role-playing card game like Munchkin: Marvel Edition! A mashup created under license from Steve Jackson Games and Marvel, the game starts with all players assuming the role of a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and setting forth on a mission from Level 1 to reach Level 10 by fighting monsters (villains) and grabbing treasure. If Pops is already familiar with the humorous original Munchkin game, he’ll be impressed with this version’s artwork and varied difficulty, thanks to special characters, strengths, and support items.

Earn yourself some “Kid of the Year” cred and score him a brand new game to show him he’ll always be your favorite superhero, be it at home, from across the country, or in your heart! Don’t make him “turn the car around”… You can find these at your local game store or from online retailers now!
